Re Gandhi being a politician, I think we're splitting hairs. Of course he was a politician, in that he involved himself in the political and made governmental changes.

Gandhi was very much a politician and social activist. He was the one who rallied partisan groups from around the country not to mention expatriate Indians all over the world. It's true that he preferred tho' to act through other people such as the Nehrus whom he placed at the helm of the newly liberated country.
